I am running out of snappy titles….

I am tired today (helped dig a ditch for a poly tunnel and practicing baking) so I don’t have the energy to think of a title that will make people want to read this! I am trying to get to know people, trying to settle in and build a life here, and I have to say, so far, so good! I was helping with the poly tunnel for the Newlyn Community Floral Group – I know that you are laughing right now, but I am really enjoying being part of a group that is improving the village. It is very surprising who joins community groups ;-). Next time, I will fill you in on the PZ Sea Gals Group…….!

The last few weeks have been mainly dry, some of that mizzle stuff at times, but not too bad. This has allowed the front courtyard area to be mostly done. I have asked for work to stop on that area now as it has taken a lot of time and money to create what is basically a parking area! I also want to prioritise the back annexe so that I can move in to it and the work on the house can begin.

There have been a couple of set backs with the building regs which has meant a bit more work moving the shed and stuff, but I have been watching coverage of the earthquake in Turkey & Syria and I am grateful that we have a strict building regime here. Things would not have been so tragic there if they had a stricter building regime with checks and balances, not that I want to be political.

I know that building work is noisy, dusty and disruptive, but I obviously wasn’t aware of how much! For the back annexe, the back door and side windows had to be taken out and then bricked up, the back of the house is already dark and the blocking up has just made it worse!

That small window on the left of the back door cannot be taken out yet as the main electrical feed from the pole outside comes in through it and only National Grid can touch it. They came out to survey it and it would have been fine, but the pole that is firmly resident in the garden at no. 3, is the original one and needs to be replaced. They have not told me when they can schedule that in – AAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!! Surely I have watched enough reno programmes that show that these kind of delays are inevitable, why has it annoyed me?!??

Now, a bit about the building team – Aaron, Kit, Conor, Jordan, Bailey, Luke, Cory, Tian and Mick – a really super group of chaps that work really well and hard. (Aaron – never selling this house, now it is in writing). They get on with the work, always jolly and polite and they put up with me constantly questionning the plan, asking how things are going to be worked up, why that bit has to be cut out, how will the cables be laid blah blah……….

I do like them being around to be honest, they are the same age as Rajiv and Ajay and my nurturing instinct kicks in and I make sure they are ok on site, I make copious coffees and sometimes tell them to leave site early. Last week I made poori’s and fairy cakes, poori’s were fine but I am not a natural baker and the fairy cakes were like rubber balls! I think that they see me as one of the ‘boys’ now which is fab but I wish I didn’t hear some of the banter that goes on!!

Until recently I have not really been out exploring too much, I do hate the cold! Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, I wrote off my car. It was just myself vs a wall and I could not tell you how it happened and I have been seriously teased about it! A family friend Nanu, happened to call the after the incident, I thought that either Aaruni or Baba may have mentioned it. When I told him what had happened, the first thing that he said to me was ‘you are Shekhar Mehta’s niece ffs, how can you crash your car?’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shekhar_Mehta#:~:text=Chandra%20Shekhar%20Mehta%20(20%20June,in%20the%20World%20Rally%20Championship.

Anyway, that aside, I have been car less which has meant that if I want wine and food, I need to walk down to the Co Op, which has shown me how fabulous Newlyn is. The pictures below are from my walks down the hill to the village, no changes made, just pictures taken on my phone. It is just so beautiful, the light is incredible, the way the sea just changes colour in an instant and seeing The Mount in clarity. I love living here, feel so settled already, and lucky.

Until next time, Dear Readers xx
